I’ve already confessed my love for the grey low version of this model here, but when the friends-and-family edition showed up, I couldn’t resist them. As an in-store exclusive, there were limited pairs around (350 is the figure I’ve seen online) but I think these would’ve been a success if they’d been made a general release.

Adding a little extra material to the uppers pushes this shoe up to a mid-top, but where the other hazelnut release went down the road of slick leather uppers, we’re sticking in nubuck territory with these. Another shoe that deserves to be worn with shorts rather than full-length trousers or jeans, I’m gonna have to keep these aside until the sun makes an appearance.

The Bodega logo sewn into the heel tab is a nice touch too.

Nike x Sole Collector – Presto (Hawaii)

Over time, I’ve become slightly numb to the deluge of special releases and limited editions. Some things still standout, but generally it’s a pretty level playing field. Some things stick in your mind for a bit and then get forgotten – but a few etch themselves into the permanent grail category. And these Prestos (which people tend to either love or hate) have been on my list since they released in 2005.

I say ‘released’, but truth be told, unless you were well-connected, the chance of scooping a pair was very slim. A true Hyperstrike edition, there were only 48 pairs made for Niketown in Waikiki (since closed) back in May 2005. With over 50 people in the queue, anyone outside of Hawaii didn’t stand much of a chance.

Although the Hawaiian connection is easy to follow with the artwork on the toe, there was a supposedly ‘hidden’ Scarface link, as the pattern on the toe is a replica of a featured mural in the film (in the scene where the cop gets a first class ticket to the resurrection).

Finding a pair was not easy. I followed a few false leads (a completed eBay auction, a Yahoo Japan auction and a messageboard) and by sheer luck someone I’d messaged through a Craigslist posting in Tokyo hit me back a full YEAR after I’d emailed them! Massive thanks to Kyle for hooking me up with these.

I’ve only got Nort Talarias (in my size, instead of the size 11s I once owned) and the Stash Dunks to find and then I’m set for Hyperstrikes. Probably.
